Week 2: Anchored in the Word
Day 11 — Hearing God Through Scripture
Scripture Reading:
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”
John 10:27 NIV
“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
Psalms 119:105 NIV
“They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?””
Luke 24:32 NIV
Devotional Thought
Depending on where you grew up, you can probably immediately tell if someone else grew up in the same place because of how they talk - their accent, words, and even mannerisms. If you live in California but grew up in Hawaii, for example, you will snap to attention in a crowded room if you hear a Hawaiian accent. Across the crowded room of this world and life, one of the most beautiful parts of following Jesus is learning to recognize His voice. Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice.” He wasn’t talking about an audible sound — He meant that His people learn to recognize how He speaks to their hearts. And the primary way God speaks is through His Word.
No matter how long you engage the Bible, when you read Scripture, the Holy Spirit highlights what you need for that moment. The same verse can speak to you in different, fresh ways in every season of your life. Sometimes a verse brings comfort. Sometimes it brings conviction. Sometimes it gives direction, strength, or peace. This is God speaking — gently shaping your heart, guiding your steps, and drawing you closer to Him.
When the disciples walked with Jesus on the road to Emmaus, they said, “Did not our hearts burn within us… as He opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32). That same burning recognition still happens today. Your heart “knows” when God is speaking.
You don’t have to force anything. Simply slow down, read with a listening posture, and ask: “Lord, what are You saying to me today?”
God’s voice through Scripture will always bring clarity, never confusion; peace, not pressure; direction, not fear.
Practice for Today
Before reading, pray:
“Holy Spirit, help me hear Your voice in Your Word.”
Read John 10:27 and Psalm 119:105 slowly.
Notice what stirs your heart or catches your attention.
