Scripture Reading:
“The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave. Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?””
1 Kings 19:11-13 NIV
“The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.”
John 10:3-4 NIV
“He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.””
Psalms 46:10 NIV
Devotional Thought
When was the last time you sat in total silence—no phone, no music, no podcast, no background noise?
For most of us, silence feels uncomfortable. We’re used to constant input. So when we pray, we often fill the space with words, thoughts, and requests—without ever slowing down enough to listen.
Prayer isn’t just talking to God—it’s also listening.
Elijah thought God would show up in something big—like wind, fire, or an earthquake. But God came in a whisper instead. That’s often how God communicates with us: quietly, gently, in ways that invite you to pause and notice.
Listening to God isn’t about hearing a literal voice. It’s about recognizing His presence, sensing His peace, noticing nudges in your heart, and seeing how Scripture comes alive at just the right moment.
Jesus said His followers recognize His voice and follow it. God wants you to know that voice too—the one that brings clarity, not confusion; peace, not pressure; direction, not fear.
You don’t have to figure it all out or rush. Just make a little space—even a minute—to quiet your mind and say:
“God, I’m listening.”
The more you practice, the more natural it becomes. Soon, you’ll notice His whispers throughout your day—in your thoughts, in Scripture, in the little nudges guiding your next step.
Practice for Today
Take one quiet minute.
Breathe deeply.
Say: “God, I’m listening.”
Notice any Scripture, thought, or sense of peace that gently rises.
