Scripture Reading:
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.””
Mark 10:45 NIV
“Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:”
Philippians 2:3-5 NIV
“When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.”
John 13:12-15 NIV
Devotional Thought
When was the last time someone showed up for you in a simple but meaningful way?
Not with a big gesture—just presence, help, or care at the right moment.
Jesus didn’t talk about serving as an idea. He lived it.
One of the clearest things He said about Himself was that He didn’t come to be waited on, admired, or put on a pedestal. He came to help, to lift people up, and ultimately to give His life for others. That tells you a lot about what He values.
Serving isn’t about doing something impressive or dramatic. Most of the time it’s quiet and ordinary. It looks like helping someone who’s overwhelmed. Being fully present when someone needs to talk. Offering time, energy, or support without expecting anything back.
There’s a moment in the Bible where Jesus washes His friends’ feet—a job no one wanted to do. It wasn’t symbolic at first; it was uncomfortable and awkward. But that was the point. He wanted to show that real influence doesn’t come from status or position. It comes from humility and love in action.
Another passage encourages us to take on the mindset of Jesus—choosing humility over ego and people over self-interest. When you live that way, people don’t just see kindness. They experience something deeper through you.
Serving doesn’t make you smaller. It shapes you into someone more grounded, more human, and more like Jesus.
Practice for Today
Do one simple, intentional act of service today—something helpful, thoughtful, or encouraging—and don’t make a big deal out of it.
